Ties of Light and Field is an independent photography book that bridges cultures and landscapes through a unique narrative and design. The book explores the contrasts and connections between China and the United States, two lands captured under the shared expanse of the sky. It reflects on themes of division and unity, individuality and universality, using the language of light and the grounding presence of the earth.
The book’s structure features horizontally divided pages, juxtaposing scenes from two countries—China above, the United States below. Full-spread pages punctuate the chapters, serving as visual markers that guide the rhythm of the journey. This design invites readers to uncover their own interpretations, blending stories across cultures and time.
Innovative materials enhance the tactile experience: heavy photographic paper contrasts with semi-transparent tracing paper and fully transparent film. These layers create transitions between images, inviting anticipation and discovery. Transparent overlays enrich the narrative with textures and depth, mirroring the themes of contrast and gradual integration.
Rooted in the natural world, the book draws inspiration from branches framing the sky, roots binding the earth, and horizons reaching toward infinity. These recurring motifs symbolize connection, resilience, and a shared humanity, offering a poetic meditation on the ties that bind us all.
